Optional Variable Weapon Damage table from Moldvay’s 1980 D&D Basic Rulebook. Otherwise all PC and NPC attacks did 1d6 damage, adjusted for any strength and magical bonuses. I loved the simplicity of this short table. The higher damage of two-handed weapons was balanced by their wielders always going last in initiative order and not being able to use shields. According to my margin notes I classed quarterstaffs as 1d6, and I sometimes adjusted the axe damages to match the comparable one- or two-hand swords. House rules sometimes gave dagger wielders 2 attacks to balance the low damage per hit. Mentzer’s 1983 basic rules used this same table as standard instead of optional.
